Testagen is the name of a chemically synthesized, specifically acting bioregulator in the form of a tetrapeptide, whose amino acid composition corresponds to Lysine (Lys)-Glutamic Acid (Glu)-Aspartic Acid (Asp)-Glycine (Gly) (KEDG). As such, it represents one of several chemically synthesized compounds, developed by Prof. Dr. V.V. Khavinson and his colleagues at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology on the basis of an amino acid sequences analysis of biologically active peptides isolated from testicular tissue by means of the established cytogen method of Prof. Dr. V.V. Khavinson et al., which are designed for use as short-chained (2-4 amino acids) bioregulators. The tetrapeptide KEDG is characterized by its relatively high tissue specificity for the testis. Thus, this compound preferentially acts on Leydig and Sertoli cells in the testis. While Leydig cells are involved in the production of steroid hormones, Sertoli cells play a role in providing the necessary environment for the maturation of immature germ cells into mature spermatozoa.
